BUFFALO, NY –The Canisius University International Relations Program will welcome more than 350 area high school students from 16 area schools to campus on Thursday, November 7, from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., for the 35th annual High School Model U.N. Conference. The event will take place in the Montante Cultural Center located at the corner of Main Street and Eastwood Place.
High school “delegates” represent countries of the world in simulated diplomatic deliberations and negotiations concerning international issues. Delegates prepare research on their countries and on vital international issues that they then debate in one of six concurrent sessions of the U.N Security Council, the U.N. Human Rights Council and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The proceedings are adjudicated by Canisius University student volunteers who evaluate delegates on their research and preparation, oral arguments, negotiation and compromise skills.
The International Relations Program at Canisius University educates students with an understanding of global history and politics, an awareness of foreign governments and cultures, and the ability to communicate and live among people in other countries. International business along with international educational experiences, are emphasized, as well as skill sets in research, writing and foreign language.
Canisius is one of 28 Jesuit universities in the nation and the premier, private university in Western New York.
