Important NYS Certification Exam Testing Information

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) is pleased to announce that the preparation guides, along with updated test frameworks
and other useful information for test preparation, are now available on the New York State Teacher Certification Examination (NYSTCE) website
for the Content Specialty Tests (CST) listed below.

Below is a list of the exams that are required for candidates for the following NYS initial certification areas. In addition, links have been included to the NYSTCE webpage for more information about the test frameworks, sample and practice tests, and how to register for the exams:

Childhood Education (Gr. 1-6) /Students with Disabilities (All Grades and Childhood)

Childhood Education (1-6)/Teaching English Speakers of Other Languages (PreK-12)

Adolescence Education (Gr. 7-12)

Physical Education/Health Education (PreK-12)

Early Childhood (Birth - Grade 2)

  • Multi-Subject Content Specialty Test: Early Childhood (Parts I & II) (Part III is the same for the Childhood and Early Childhood tests so it only needs to be passed once.)
  • NB: NYSED recently changed the requirements for Early Childhood certification. Now, all candidates need to have 6 credits of math, 6 credits of science, and 6 credits of social studies. It does not matter when you took the EDY courses or the Early Childhood CST exam; you must follow the guidelines under effect at the time of your application.

Middle Childhood Extension (Gr. 5-6 or 7-9)
(NB: This is only applicable if candidates have 30 credit hours in one of NYS approved content areas.)

The following programs require initial certification prior to achieving professional certification. If there has been some time since your initial certification, the Educating All Students Test may not have been required. Please check your TEACH account to see if you did in fact take and pass the exam.
