Canisius uses License Plate Recognition (LPR). Your license plate is your virtual permit to park on campus. Canisius students, faculty, staff, and visitors need to register their vehicle(s) to park in a campus parking lot. A virtual parking permit entitles the registrant to park only if there is available space in the parking lot for which the permit is valid. Although the university does not guarantee a parking space, there are an ample number of spaces available daily. During certain special events or occasions, parking restrictions will be regulated by the Department of Public Safety. Registrants should always lock their doors and take steps to safeguard the vehicle and contents. Canisius University shall be exempt from any and all liability for any damage, theft or injury to property and persons.

Parking Enforcement and Regulations
Parking and traffic regulations are strictly enforced 24 hours a day, year-round. People who drive vehicles on campus are subject at all times to the motor vehicle laws of the state of New York and, where applicable, to the ordinances of the city of Buffalo. Use of all lots is restricted to properly registered vehicles. Violators will be issued a Canisius University citation. Parking on the city street is regulated by the City of Buffalo Police and Parking Violations Bureau. Illegally-parked vehicles, those creating a hazard and abandoned vehicles are subject to towing and impoundment at the owner’s expense. Canisius University shall be exempt from any and all liability for any damage to the vehicle. The operation of a motor vehicle on the campus of Canisius University is a privilege granted by this institution. Serious or excessive traffic violations may result in the loss of this privilege.
- Enforcement procedures are the same for all permit classifications.
- All persons are required to obey posted speed limits, traffic control devices and posted parking requirements at all times.
- Each virtual permit registrant shall be responsible for ensuring that the vehicle is properly registered and that the vehicle is parked in the correct parking lot. Each Canisius University parking lot is conspicuously posted with signs that indicate restrictions for that lot.
- All vehicles must be parked between marked parallel lines.
- Parking is prohibited in all driveways and entrances to all parking lots.
- No person shall park a vehicle on the premises of the university in such a manner as to interfere with the use of a fire hydrant, fire lane or other emergency zone, create any other hazard or unreasonably interfere with the use of a roadway or pedestrian way.
- Motorcycles, mopeds, motor scooters and motor bicycles are not permitted to park on sidewalks, under building overhangs, inside courtyards or in buildings or interfere with pedestrian traffic.
- Vehicles not registered are subject to Department of Motor Vehicles computer checks, a computer check surcharge, applicable campus registration fees, and payment of all previous tickets.
- Moving violations and unauthorized parking subject students, employees and visitors to ticketing and fines, wheel locks, and/or towing to an off-campus site at the owner’s expense.
- A vehicle owner and/or permit registrant is responsible for any violations and/or damage caused on campus grounds regardless of who was operating the vehicle.
- Overnight parking is only available in the Resident Student lots. Only properly registered and permitted vehicles are allowed to park overnight.
- Fines are to be paid at parking.canisius.edu within 15 days of the violation; students may be billed.
- Failure to pay fines may result in additional sanctions, including but not limited to; late fees, wheel locks, disciplinary actions and/or loss of campus parking privileges.
- An individual who owns, maintains, or operates a motor vehicle on campus is responsible for violations regardless of whether or not he/she had possession of, or was operating the vehicle at the time of the violation. It is the owner's responsibility to advise any driver of the university parking rules and regulations.
Parking Citation Appeals
As a university student, faculty, staff, or visitor, you agree to abide by the university's parking rules and regulations. All citations are presumed valid. The individual is responsible for presenting information when submitting the electronic appeal that would invalidate a ticket. Once an appeal is submitted, a subsequent appeal is not permitted. If you feel that you have been issued a ticket in error or there are extenuating circumstances, the appeals process is as follows:
- Appeals must be submitted within 15 days of the issuance of a citation. All appeals must be submitted online at Citation Appeals.
- Past parking violations will factor into the Appeals Board’s decision.
- Decisions of the Appeals Board are final
- Insufficient grounds for appeal
- not registered yet/did not have time to register
- just dropping something off/vehicle was not parked there long
- others who parked the same way did not receive tickets
- use of flashing hazard lights (or four-way lights)
- inclement weather
- the owner of the vehicle was not driving it at the time of the violation
- can't afford the fine
- did not know of or was not informed of the violation
- someone said it was OK
- parked there before and did not receive a ticket
- disagree with parking rules and regulations
- was late and in a hurry
- False or misleading statements or failure to disclose pertinent information will result in denial of appeal and may result in the loss of parking privileges and/or other appropriate administrative action.
- If your appeal is denied, the fine must be paid.
