BUFFALO, NY – The Catholic Studies Lecture Program at Canisius University will present a showing of the documentary “After I Pick the Fruit,” on Tuesday, November 12, from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. in Old Main, Room 303. The 90-minute film will be followed by a panel discussion. The event is free and open to the public.
“After I Pick the Fruit” was produced and directed by Nancy Gherter of Rochester, NY. The documentary follows the lives of five immigrant women farm workers over a 10- year period as they labor in the apple orchards and fields of Western New York, migrate seasonally to Florida, raise their families, and try to hide from the immigration raids conducted in response to the events of September 11, 2001.
The panel discussion that will follow the film will be led by Gherter and Msgr. David Gallivan, pastor of Holy Cross Church in Buffalo, where a vital migrant ministry exists. The discussion, which will be open for audience participation, will also offer the historic context surrounding migrant workers, primarily on the local level. It will also include a response to the vocal anti-immigration movement with a sense of social justice that includes human rights for and dignity of migrant workers and immigrants.
Gherter’s documentary showing is sponsored with additional assistance from the Canisius University Mission and Identity and Campus Ministry offices, as well as the Rev. J. Clayton Murray, S.J., Archives and Special Collections and the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library.
