BUFFALO, NY - Canisius Vice President for Academic Affairs, Margaret C. McCarthy, PhD, appointed Daniel J. Borgia, PhD, as the next dean of the Richard J. Wehle School of Business. Borgia is currently associate dean and professor of finance for the College of Business and Economics at the University of Idaho. He begins his new position at Canisius University on July 11.
As chief academic officer for the Wehle School of Business, Borgia is charged with building on the school’s existing strengths while positioning the school for a strong and successful future. Accredited by AACSB International for more than three decades, the Wehle School of Business offers some of the most prominent business programs in the region. Borgia’s role will require that he develop and foster successful and collaborative partnerships with members of the business community; advance academic excellence through outstanding teaching, scholarship and service; and promote excellence in student learning. Additionally, he is responsible for developing new academic experiences that prepare students for success in a global marketplace, and leading efforts to broaden and diversify the business school faculty and student body.
“Dan’s experience as an administrator, teacher and scholar reflects a leadership style that is collaborative, entrepreneurial and interdisciplinary, and adept to meet the current challenges that higher education is facing,” says McCarthy. “He will be an excellent addition to the Canisius community.”
Borgia brings with him to the position nearly two decades of higher education experience. In his most recent role as associate dean and professor of finance at the University of Idaho, he oversaw a significant and challenging update of the College of Business and Economics’ curriculum to insure sustainability and to increase its flexibility and relevancy. He served as the primary author of the college’s AACSB accreditation report, which led to its successful AACSB reaccreditation under the new 2013 standards.
An accomplished educator, Borgia’s scholarly interests are broad and multidisciplinary. In recent years, his research focused on financial education, financial services, international business, entrepreneurship and topics related to China. He has taught a wide array of courses at the undergraduate, graduate and executive education levels. Borgia also has broad international teaching experience. He spent one year in China as a Fulbright scholar at Nanjing University, six years as a faculty member at the Copenhagen Business School’s International Summer University Program, and three years at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China.
“I believe my global perspective, as reflected in my international background and other teaching and business activities around the world, will be an asset in expanding international opportunities for students and faculty,” says Borgia.
He holds a PhD in finance and international business from Kent State University; an MBA from Gannon University; and a bachelor’s degree in management from Cornell University.
Borgia replaces Richard A. Shick, PhD, who has been serving as dean of the Richard J. Wehle School of Business since 2013 and previously served 23 years in the position.
