Buffalo, NY - The Canisius University Center for Urban Education hosts a symposium entitled “A New Racial Literacy for Educational Equity” on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The event, held in partnership with the National Urban Alliance (NUA), is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Housed in the college’s School of Education & Human Services, the Center for Urban Education is the leader in professional development and advocacy for teaching and learning in urban schools across Western New York.
“The partnership between NUA and Canisius University is a natural one,” says Jeffrey R. Lindauer, PhD, dean of the School of Education & Human Services. “Canisius has a long history of preparing educators. Most recently, the School of Education has invested more time and resources in preparing educators to work with students in urban settings. And our campus’ location – in central Buffalo – makes us an ideal place to house such an innovative center.”
“We bring gifted education and neuroscience strategies into schools for all students, with the goal of eliminating the gap between a child’s potential and how that child is actually performing,” says Eric J. Cooper, president and founder of NUA. “Working with Canisius University is a perfect way to do what we do best - Use cultural competency and a racial equity lens to bridge the worlds of K-12 and higher education, in order to distill successful strategies for teacher recruitment, training and retention.”
The event begins with keynote speaker Jabari Mahiri, PhD, professor of education and the William and Mary Jane Brinton Family Chair in Urban Teaching at the University of California, Berkeley. Mahiri is also a senior scholar for the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education and the principal investigator of T E A C H (Technology Equity And Culture High-schools), a research initiative that collaborates with urban schools and community partners on increasing educational equity, technology, and achievement for all students.
Mahiri will participate in a discussion with panelists and the audience after the keynote address.
