Buffalo, NY – The fall 2024 season of ArtsCanisius continues on Saturday, November 2 when it hosts “The Two Sides of Sax,” in collaboration with A Musical Feast. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. ArtsCanisius presents lectures and concerts by professional artists and musicians, including members of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Canisius faculty, as well as student recitals. A Musical Feast brings contemporary and classical music performances, combined with poetry and dance programming, to the Greater Buffalo community. It was established in 2006 by retired Concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Charles Haupt, who passed away in August. The November 2 concert will be dedicated in his memory.
“The Two Sides of Sax” will present a collection of pieces from the “classical” side of the saxophone repertoire. The performers for these pieces are Sander Beumer and Hans van Ham, Dutch musicians who make up Duo Beumer van Ham. Saxophonist Sander and pianist Hans represent the Utrecht Conservatoire and specialize in French saxophone repertoire. Wildy Zumwalt, professor of music at SUNY Fredonia who is a scholar of early German saxophone repertoire and his colleague at Fredonia, Elliot Scozzaro, a former award winner with the Eastman Youth Orchestra in Rochester, will round out the first half. Elliot Scozzaro is an acclaimed arranger and composer.
On the “jazz” side of the repertoire, the second half of the program will feature free-wheeling improvisation with pianist Hans van Ham joining Buffalo native and Shirmer prize winner from Eastman School of Music, Stephen Parisi on bass.
Rounding out this impressive group of talented musicians is world-renown jazz pianist George Caldwell. Hailing from Clarksdale, MI, Caldwell is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory and has played with such jazz luminaries as Clifford Jordan and the Duke Ellington Orchestra.
