BUFFALO, NY – Three Canisius University students received the 2011 Excellence in Accounting Scholarships, presented by the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) and its Foundation for Accounting Education, in conjunction with the NYSSCPA Buffalo chapter. Joseph G. Long ’11 and Caitlin M. Slattery ’11 are recipients of the NYSSCPA state scholarship. Laura Wrightson ’12 is a recipient of the NYSSCPA Buffalo Chapter scholarship.
Long received his undergraduate degree in accounting and finance from Canisius University in 2011. Slattery also graduated in 2011 with an undergraduate degree in accounting and accounting information systems. Both Long and Slattery are currently in their fifth year of the college’s dual degree program. This program enables qualified students to earn an undergraduate degree and a master’s of business administration (MBA) degree within a five-year period.
Wrightson will earn her undergraduate degree in May 2012. She is pursuing a dual major in accounting and accounting information systems.
Established in 1990, NYSSCPA state scholarships are supported by contributions from statewide membership. To extend aid to additional Buffalo-area students, the NYSSCPA Buffalo Chapter exclusively sponsors two scholarships each year. The scholarship funds provide financial assistance to encourage and aid deserving candidates who plan to enter the accounting profession.
NYSSCPA represents more than 28,000 certified public accountants, who work in public firms, industry, government and academia. It is the oldest state accounting organization in the nation.
Canisius University is one of 28 Catholic Jesuit colleges in the nation and the premier private college in Western New York. Canisius prepares leaders – intelligent, caring, faithful individuals – able to pursue and promote excellence in their professions, their communities and their service to humanity.
