BUFFALO, NY – ArtsCanisius presents the following performances and lectures, which are free and open to the public, unless otherwise specified:
- Saturday, September 10 – First Annual Flute Day presented by the newly-formed Buffalo Flute Club. Nationally recognized flutist and composer Michael Colquhoun, PhD, will lead a day of flute-related activities, which will culminate in a concert at 7:00 p.m. in Montante Cultural Center. The performance features Michael Colquhoun, flutes; and Don Metz; guitar. The concert will be a performance of Colquhoun’s music; which is an eclectic mix of classical, modern and jazz as well as arrangements of jazz standards by the duo. All advanced flute players (NYSSMA level 4), including students, are invited to perform his “Speshal Birds” which requires a large number of musicians. The 7:00 concert is free and open to the public.
- Sunday, September 18 – “Going for Baroque,” a Meet-the-Faculty Recital featuring Canisius University Camerata at 2:30 p.m. in theMontante Cultural Center. The group consists of Ansgarius Aylward, violin; Betsy Reeds, flute; Anna Mattix, oboe and English horn; Ellen Barnum, bassoon; and Jane Cary, harpsichord. The performance will include works by CPE Bach, JS Bach, and Telemann.
- Tuesday, September 20 – Music Lecture at 2:30 p.m. in the Regis Room of the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center. James Davis, PhD, professor of musicology and musicology area head at the School of Music at the State University of New York at Fredonia, will give a presentation entitled “Military Bands and the Intersection of Communities during the American Civil War.” Davis’ primary research focus is the music and musicians of the American Civil War. He will discuss how the military brass band, situated at the center of American musical culture during the war, bridged communities in such a way as to unite the past and present, soldiers and civilians, and even the North and South.
- Monday, September 26 – Meet-the-Faculty Recital at 12 p.m. in theMontante Cultural Center. The concert will feature Melissa Thorburn, mezzo-soprano; and Richard Falkenstein, guitar in a performance of works newly transcribed for voice and guitar by Schubert, Dowland, Rutter, and others. Thorburn and Falkenstein recently performed these works in France and are eager to present them in Buffalo.
- Thursday, September 29 – Art History Lecture at 2:30 p.m. in theRegis Room of the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center. Elizabeth Legge, PhD, associate professor of modern art in the Department of Art at the University of Toronto, will give a lecture entitled Superfaciality: The Ethics of Taking Photographs in a Mirror.” During the lecture, Legge will discuss Michael Snow’s Authorization (1969), a series of five Polaroid photographs taken in a mirror and mounted on the mirror in which they were taken.
The ArtsCanisius series at Canisius University presents concerts by professional musicians, including members of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Canisius faculty, art shows and lectures by professional artists, as well as student recitals.
