BUFFALO, NY - Canisius University will introduce a new master’s of science degree in health information technology beginning in fall 2013.
The new program combines healthcare, business and information technology to advance healthcare professionals’ understanding of increasingly complex healthcare operations. Core courses focus on health services and information systems, clinical computing, information technology security and privacy, healthcare reporting and information exchange, as well as business operations and project management. In addition, the curriculum examines the moral and social aspects of the health information technology field.
“Canisius’ new MS in health information technology provides the academic preparation and clinical experience required so our students graduate prepared to transform healthcare by applying a cutting-edge integration of technology and health information management,” says Michael J. Pardales, PhD, dean of the School of Education and Human Services. “Graduates will possess the judgment needed to substantially improve patient care throughout our health system.”
The MS in health information technology is for individuals with bachelor’s degrees who are currently working in healthcare, finance, healthcare policy, public health or related fields. The program is offered in an online format to accommodate the busy lifestyles of working professionals. The curriculum may be completed in less than two years when summer sessions are utilized.
Graduates of program will be qualified for work wherever health information is collected, organized and analyzed, including hospitals, physicians’ offices, nursing homes, ambulatory care clinics, insurance companies, research and government agencies, and consulting firms.
