BUFFALO, NY ― Beginning in fall 2017, Canisius University will introduce Chemistry with Business, a new concentration in the College of Arts & Sciences. The program combines the theoretical and technical instruction of chemistry with business management coursework to prepare graduates for a broad range of career paths. In addition to chemistry and biochemistry coursework, the interdisciplinary program requires that students complete foundational business courses in economics, marketing, finance, management and accounting.
“Chemistry and biochemistry graduates have strong analytical, quantitative and communication skills, which make them highly sought after by a wide range of industries, including ones beyond traditional chemical companies,” explains Elizabeth A. Gill, PhD, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Canisius is pleased to offer this new interdisciplinary program, which directly addresses an increasing diversity in the career paths of chemistry and biochemistry majors and enables graduates to access a wider range of career opportunities.”
Gill explains that many chemistry and biochemistry students enter traditional post-graduate studies in medical, dental, pharmacy and science PhD programs. Additionally, a larger percentage of today’s graduates are interested in pursuing immediate employment in industry or preparing for entrance into MBA, law and other programs.
“This new concentration will equip graduates with marketable knowledge of pertinent aspects of business, a rigorous science knowledge and the skills necessary to assume leadership roles in any number of industries,” Gill adds.
Chemical industries comprise the largest manufacturing sector in the United States, as measured by GDP, and encompass pharmaceutical, agricultural, petrochemical, manufacturing chemicals and consumer products. In addition to employment as chemists in traditional chemical industries, chemistry and biochemistry graduates have careers in a broad range of areas including intellectual property, law, environmental policy, insurance, sales and marketing.
The chemistry and biochemistry programs at Canisius are certified by the American Chemical Society. One hundred percent (100%) of graduates who apply to PhD programs are accepted and more than 90 percent of graduates who apply to medical school are accepted.
