BUFFALO, NY ― The 2008 financial crisis brought big changes to the way banks and investment houses do business. But its effects weren’t limited to Wall Street. The market meltdown also changed how finance students need to prepare for future careers. To address this need, the Canisius University Richard J. Wehle School of Business is introducing a new master of science degree in finance, in fall 2019.
The graduate program is an extension of the college’s popular undergraduate degree in finance, which is ranked No. 18 in the country by U.S. News & World Report. Canisius University is one of only two institutions in the United States to have ever won the CFA Institute Research Challenge. The annual event pits approximately 4,000 students from nearly 900 universities worldwide in an equity-research and valuation competition.
“Canisius is the best institution in the region for finance, hands down,” says Denise M. Rotondo, PhD, dean of the Richard J. Wehle School of Business. “The college has a long history of excellence in finance and the new master’s degree program is just another step in our journey to educate the next generation of finance leaders.”
The MS in finance provides advanced knowledge in the areas of corporate finance, investment management, portfolio management, and financial institutions and markets. The 30-credit hour program is distinguished by its offering of four specialized concentrations: investment research, risk management, data analytics and general finance. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, regional employment in these areas is expected to grow 11.5% through 2024. In addition to the knowledge base, students will gain a strong foundation in ethics, standards of professional conduct, communication and team work.
Extended, hands-on learning opportunities outside the classroom further expand the educational value of the MS degree in finance. High profile internships at investment banks, wealth management companies and major commercial banks are available to students. Real-world experience in investment research and portfolio management is also available via the Golden Griffin Fund, which operates out of the college’s state-of-the-art financial markets lab and provides students with hands-on learning experiences in investment management and equity analysis. Flexible scheduling enables students to pursue full- or part-time study.
The Richard J. Wehle School of Business offers students a rare combination of world-class programs taught by exceptional faculty in a learning environment that emphasizes the development of ethical and socially responsible leaders. It is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), a standard achieved by fewer than five percent of business schools worldwide, and ranked No. 7 among small private institutions nationally, by U.S. News & World Report.
