Veterans Day Events Honor Military Sacrifices

Buffalo, NY - The Canisius University Office of Veterans Services and Army ROTC hosted Veterans Day events to remember the sacrifices of America’s 25 million veterans.

Canisius President John J. Hurley and Coordinator of Veterans Services Andrew Overfield cut the ribbon on the Canisius Veterans Lounge during a ceremony in Lyons Hall Room 118. The Veterans Center Lounge provides an area for students to relax, study and socialize with other veteran students, and have access to the coordinator of both on- and off-campus support resources. 



At Noon, Canisius held a Veterans Day observance in front of Bagen Hall at the college’s Greatest Generation Memorial. In addition to remarks by President Hurley and Rev. John P. Bucki, S.J., director of campus ministry, the Canisius community paid special respect to the more than 6,000 service members, who gave their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, with a reading of the names of those who died in these conflicts. The roll call lasted more than six hours. 





As part of the National Roll Call, Canisius also observed a “minute of silence” at 2 p.m. to honor the fallen. Canisius is one of 177 schools nationwide, and the only school in Buffalo, to participate in the Roll Call.

As a show of service and pride, all Canisius faculty and staff who are veterans wore their ribbons or medals on Veterans Day. Medals tell a story of service, sacrifice, honor and accomplishment. By wearing them on Veterans Day, Canisius veterans can tell their story to the entire college and help teach students the true meaning of citizenship and freedom.
