HESAA Admissions Requirements

The Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration (HESAA) program accepts applications on a rolling admissions basis. However, if prospective students are interested in applying for an assistantship, they should adhere to the deadlines below. Completed applications are reviewed by the admissions committee and students are notified of the admissions decision within two weeks of their review date.

  • This program is a fall start only program for those wishing to take courses full-time.
  • Students taking part-time courses may apply for the Fall or Spring.

In order to participate in the Assistantship Day application process students should apply by the following deadlines (all admission application materials must be received by the deadlines below to be considered):

  • International applicants: apply by November 15, 2024.
  • Domestic applicants: apply by January 15, 2025.


Application for admission to the program is open to any qualified holder of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university regardless of undergraduate field of study. Applicants must meet the general requirements for admission to graduate work in the School of Education and Human Services.

As an applicant for admission, you must present evidence of your ability to participate successfully in a graduate-level academic endeavor. In order to be considered for admission, you must submit:

  • Online Application

  • Personal Statement - a 300 word essay describing your motivation to pursue a degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration. Please explain your desire to complete your Master's degree at Canisius University.

  • Resume

  • Transcripts from the institution you have, or will be receiving, your degree from - unofficial or in progress transcripts are acceptable to begin the admissions review process

    • You must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning to be considered for admission with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.75, 3.0 in major courses

  • If the cumulative GPA is under a 3.0, two letters of recommendation must be submitted:
    • 1 letter from a professor speaking to your readiness for graduate school
    • 1 letter from a higher education professional explaining why you are a good fit for the higher education field

Additional Requirements for International Students

- If your transcripts are not on a 4.0 scale or translated to English, additional evaluation may be required 

-Proof of English Language Proficiency:

  • TOEFL 79 IBT or 550 PBT
  • IELTS 6.5 overall
  • Duolingo English Test minimum score of 105
