ArtsCanisius presents Newcomers, a photography exhibit featuring the work of Lukia Costello, in the college’s Peter A. and Mary Lou Vogt Gallery in the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library. An artist’s reception will be held on Friday, April 25 from 5 p.m. − 7 p.m. in the library.
“Newcomers” consists of black and white photographs of the faces of Buffalo’s refugee population. From 2010-2011 alone, 3,000 refugees from countries such as Burma, Somalia and Bhutan started new lives in Buffalo. Costello, who taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in the Buffalo Public Schools for three years, was touched and inspired by their resilience and sense of humor in the face of a dramatic transition and an uncertain future. She decided to capture and share that spirit, as well as the beauty and diversity these individuals add to our city, in a traveling exhibition.
Costello is a self-taught freelance photography professional. A recent NYFA Independent Commission recipient, her work has been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. As a member of The New York Times freelance pool and the American Society of Media Photographers, Costello’s services are used by individuals, businesses and higher education clients for editorial, marketing and social media applications.
