Canisius Presents Early Fall 2015 ArtsCanisius Programs

BUFFALO, NY – ArtsCanisius presents its early fall programs, which are free and open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.

  • Monday, September 14 Meet-the-Faculty Lecture at 12:00 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. During the lecture-recital, entitled “Playing the Image: Graphic Notation and Improvisation,” Michael Colquhoun, PhD, composer/flutist and adjunct professor of music at Canisius, will explore the connections between sight and sound. Colquhoun will be assisted by Ellen Barnum, bassoonist and adjunct professor of music at Canisius.

Colquhoun is active as a solo recitalist, teacher and composer. His works have been published by McGinnis and Marx Music Publishers, and performed by Los Caribes, the New Music Consort, the Talking Drums and the New Jazz Orchestra. Colquhoun’s compositions have been performed throughout Western New York and worldwide, including New York City, Boston, Toronto, Montreal, Prague and Seoul. Locally, selected compositions have been broadcast on WBFO-FM, WHLD-AM and WNED-FM.

  • Sunday, September 20Stecher and Horowitz International Piano Competition Winner Recital at 2:00 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The performance will feature Katie Liu, who was the first-prize winner at the 2010 fifth New York International Piano Competition, presented under the auspices of the Stecher and Horowitz Foundation. Liu will perform a program of piano works by Chopin.

Liu, 20, has been hailed by The Washington Post as “a pianist with a burgeoning talent and a musical poise well beyond her years.” A native of Singapore, she started playing piano at age four. Liu has won top prizes in competitions such as the 3rd Asia-Pacific International F. Chopin Piano Competition, Montreal International Music Competition, Eastman Young Artists Competition, and the Music Teachers’ National Association Competition. In 2011 and 2012, Liu was selected to receive a scholarship from the Chopin Foundation of the United States. She has appeared as a soloist with such orchestras as the Daegu Symphony Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra.   Liu is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree at the Curtis Institute of Music.

  • Monday, September 21Meet-the-Faculty Recital at 12:00 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The recital will feature Cristen Gregory, soprano; Bryan Eckenrode, cello; and Jane Cary, piano. The trio will perform works by Irene Akerley Canning, H.J. Tandler, Raymond Loughborough, Giacomo Puccini, Leonard Bernstein and W.A. Mozart, among others.
  • Tuesday, September 29Informally-Formal Chamber Recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The performance will feature Amelie Fradette, cellist for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO); Loren Silvertrust, BPO violinist; and Susan Schuman, piano. The group will perform Astor Piazolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, American composer Paul Schoenfield’s trio Café Music and Dmitry Shostakovich’s Trio No. 2 in e minor, Opus 67. Tickets are $15 general admission; $7 for students and can be purchased by calling the Fine Arts Office at (716) 888-2542, online at edu/artscanisius-tickets, or at the door.

The ArtsCanisius series at Canisius University presents concerts by professional musicians, including members of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Canisius faculty, art shows and lectures by professional artists, as well as student recitals.
