BUFFALO, NY – Canisius University students, faculty and administrators will participate in various events during Pope Francis’ historic visit to the United States this week.
Pope Francis’ encyclical will be the topic of a panel discussion on Wednesday, September 23. Speakers from across campus will reflect on the significance of the Pope’s encyclical within their area of knowledge, discipline or program. On Thursday, September 24, Canisius will join with more than half of the nation’s Jesuit colleges and universities to host a Papal Watch Party, as Pope Francis addresses a joint session of Congress. In addition, two Canisius students will cover Pope Francis’ Mass of Canonization for the student newspaper, The Griffin, and the Canisius University Office of Campus Ministry will lead a group of students to Philadelphia to attend the Mass with Pope Francis on Sunday, September 27. A more detailed itinerary of the week is included below:
- Wednesday, September 23 at 4:15 p.m. – Canisius students Christopher Gates and Kyle Ferrara have received credentials to cover the Mass of Canonization of Juniper Serra in Washington, D.C. for The Griffin. The college’s student newspaper will provide full coverage of the Pope’s visit at www.canisiusgriffin.wordpress.com.
- Wednesday, September 23 at 4:30 p.m. – “Reflections on Pope Francis’ Visit and Encyclical” in the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library. Canisius students and professors, from various academic disciplines, discuss the significance of Pope Francis’ encyclical “Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home.”
- Thursday, September 24 at 10 a.m. – Pope Watch Party in Science Hall. The Canisius community will gather to watch “live” as Pope Francis addresses a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress.
- Friday, September 25 at 4:00 p.m. – Approximately 10 Canisius students, along with Mike Hayes, director of campus ministry, and Rev. James Pribek, SJ, associate professor of English, will depart Canisius for Philadelphia.
- Sunday, September 27 at 4:00 p.m. –The Canisius group attends Mass for the conclusion of the World Meeting of Families, at Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
