BUFFALO, NY - For the seventh consecutive year, Canisius University is among the top institutes of higher education designated a 2016 Military Friendly School by Victory Media, publisher of G.J. Jobs and Military Spouse magazines. The annual ranking provides service members and their families with transparent, data-driven ratings about post-military education and career opportunities.
“Veterans who return to an academic environment need a specialized approach to their educations, as well as a veteran-specific support system,” says Anne Marie Dobies ’92, MS ’99, MS ’06, assistant vice president and director of the Griff Center, which manages the college’s veterans’ services. “We have a long history of supporting the men and women who serve our country, and are proud to provide them with excellent undergraduate and graduate school options, which are flexible, affordable and meet their educational and personal needs.”
The Military Friendly Schools designation is awarded to those colleges, universities, community colleges and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace military students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their successes in the classroom and after graduation.
“Post-secondary institutions earning the 2016 Military Friendly School award have exceptionally strong programs for transitioning service members and spouses,” says Daniel Nichols, chief product officer of Victory Media. “Our Military Friendly Schools are truly aligning their military programs and services with employers to help students translate military experience, skills and training into successful careers after graduation.”
The methodology used for making the Military Friendly Schools list has played a significant role over the past seven years in capturing and advancing best practices to support military students across the country. Institutions competed for the Military Friendly School title by completing a survey of more than 100 questions that covered 10 categories, including military support on campus, graduation and employment outcomes, and military spouse policies. Survey responses were scored
against benchmarks across these key indicators of success. In addition, data was independently tested by Ernst & Young based upon the weightings and methodology established by Victory Media with guidance from an independent advisory board of higher education and recruiting professionals.
Canisius instituted an Office of Veterans Services in March 2011 to meet the needs of a growing veteran student population, which has more than doubled since 2007. The Office of Veterans Services provides academic, disability, career and social support for these non-traditional students.
