BUFFALO, NY − Rev. Thomas R. Slon, SJ, is the new rector of the Canisius Jesuit Community in Buffalo, NY.
Appointed by Rev. Adolfo Nicolàs, SJ, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, appointed Father Slon is charged with ensuring the efficient operation of the Jesuit community, fostering the spiritual well-being of the community and its members, and assisting the directors of the apostolic works where the Jesuits of the community minister.
The Canisius Jesuit Community is located on the Canisius University campus, and its members serve in various capacities at Canisius University, Canisius High School, the Nativity Miguel Middle School, St. Michael’s Parish, and Christ the King Seminary. They also assist in various parishes throughout the Buffalo Diocese.
“Although it’s been decades since I was last a resident in the Buffalo area, I look forward to settling in a bit where it all began for me,” said Father Slon. “I am an alumnus of Canisius High School where I first met the Jesuits, so to come back to Buffalo as a Jesuit and engage in the work that the Jesuits and our colleagues do here is especially exciting and gratifying.”
Most recently, Father Slon served as the executive assistant (Socius) for the New York Provincial and, when the New York and New England provinces merged to form the United States Northeast Province in December 2014, he served the provincial of that new province. Before assuming these administrative posts, Father Slon worked as an intern architect at the University of Scranton and then as a licensed architect at the office of Arthur John Sikula, Associates in New York City.
A native of Cheektowaga, NY, Father Slon entered the Society of Jesus in 1979 and was ordained a priest at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in 1990. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Cornell University, a Master of Divinity degree and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Weston School of Theology, and a Master’s in Architecture degree from Catholic University.
Canisius is one of 28 Jesuit universities in the nation and the premier private university in Western New York.
