BUFFALO, NY – The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) named its lifetime achievement award in honor of Peter M. Koehneke, professor of kinesiology and director of the Athletic Training Program at Canisius University. Koehneke presented the inaugural award during CAATE’s annual conference which was held October 21-23 in Tampa, FL.
The Pete Koehneke Lifetime Achievement Award honors an outstanding leader in athletic training education who has made significant contributions of exceptional value to the field over a sustained period of service. Recipients of this award, through their dedication and work, have had a lasting influence on the course of the profession at the national and international level.
In addition to four decades of service in athletic training education, Koehneke has been committed to athletic training accreditation since 1990, when he became a member of the American Medical Association (AMA) /Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education (CAAHEP) Joint Review Committee for Athletic Training (JRC-AT). His role with JRC-AT included the writing and revision of accreditation standards, conducting many training workshops, scheduling site visits, participating as a site visitor for more than 30 site visits, and reviewing hundreds of candidacy reports until candidacy was discontinued in 2007. Koehneke served as vice chair of the JRC-AT from 1994-1998 and chair from 1998-2004. He subsequently dedicated his time and efforts to the Board of Certification serving as Vice-President and President, while he has continued to serve as a CAATE site visitor. Koehneke was selected as the recipient of CAATE’s Bob & Lynn Caruther’s Service Award in 2014.
Koehneke is a graduate of Indiana State University, where he earned a BS in physical and health education with an athletic training specialization, and an MS in adapted physical education and athletic training.
