Buffalo, NY - Canisius University received the UCAP designation (Universities and Colleges with Actuarial Programs) from the Society of Actuaries (SOA).
“Canisius is the first college in the Buffalo area to receive a UCAP designation,” says Byung-Jay Kahng, PhD, chair of the Mathematics & Statistics Department. “In addition to pre-actuarial exam preparation, our program offers internship experiences and includes mentoring opportunities from Canisius alumni in the field.”
The requirements for this special designation include maintaining course coverage for at least two actuarial exams, and offering approved courses for at least one Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) topic. Canisius offers three approved courses - Applied Statistics, Corporate Finance, and Economics. In addition, the college has two newly-developed actuarial review courses that prepare students to take Exam P and Exam FM of the Society of Actuaries and Exam 1 and 2 from the Casualty Actuary Society.
Actuary is a highly-regarded profession, and employment opportunities exist wherever managing risk is a concern. Actuaries use mathematics, probability and statistics to help organizations plan for the future and protect themselves from loss. Recently, Careercast.com ranked actuary number one in their list of the top 200 jobs.
