Buffalo, NY - Canisius President Steve Stoute issued the following statement today, Thursday, June 29, following the Supreme Court ruling to overturn affirmative action:
"I was disheartened to hear today that the Supreme Court ruled to overturn decades of legal precedent and effectively end affirmative action. This decision, albeit extremely disappointing, does not change anything for Canisius.
We will continue to provide a transformative education that prepares students to succeed in an ever-changing and increasingly diverse society. We will do so by creating a learning environment that includes students, faculty and staff, reflective of the world we inhabit.
We will remain committed to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion on our campus and in our society by eliminating barriers to a high-quality, transformative Canisius education for students from all backgrounds.
We will continue to work collaboratively, with all our constituents, toward a truly inclusive experience throughout all aspects of campus life.
At Canisius, we prepare the leaders of tomorrow and we will continue to challenge our students to learn, grow and serve together with those who are different than them, and in so doing we will contribute to a more just society.
These things are central to our Jesuit mission and identity, and rise above the legal framework in this country."
Steve K. Stoute,
President, Canisius University
