  • Meg Keller-Cogan, EdD, joined WKBW-TV Channel 7 for a live interview on Nov. 20 to discuss the potential impact of President-elect Trump's proposal to dismantle the Department of Education.  The director of Canisius' graduate program in educational leadership and supervision spoke about the possible challenges of maintaining consistent educational quality across state lines and risks to educational equity and accountability in the absence of a federal framework.   • The Buffalo News interviewed Julie Anna Golebiewski, PhD, for a Nov. 19 story about the region's rising unemployment rate, which increased to 3.6% in October.  The assistant professor of economics and finance in the Wehle Business School explained that the shrinking labor force, driven by retirements and workers leaving the area as remote work opportunities fade, is contributing to the increase in joblessness.  Golebiewski emphasized that attracting new workers and retaining local graduates is crucial for sustaining job growth in the region.   • Emerita Professor Barb Irwin spoke with Spectrum News 1 in Los Angeles, CA, about the latest TV milestone hit by "The Young and the Restless."  The iconic soap opera aired its 13,000th episode on Nov. 13 after originally debuting in 1973.  Irwin noted that "soap operas continued to hold a unique place in the entertainment industry."   • Vice President for Student Affairs Harold Fields, EdD, was quoted in a Nov. 10 Forbes article on strategies employers can use to support and empower Gen Z employees.   • Steve Gattuso recently provided expert commentary to MoneyGeek about personal loans.   • WBFO Radio interviewed Canisius Professor Shyam Sriram, PhD, for a Nov. 7 story titled "Questions Loom About Immigration After Flip of 143rd District." The story discusses the impact of the 143rd District Assembly race in Erie County, which saw a shift to a Republican representative. A key focus was the candidates' positions on immigration and refugees. Sriram provided commentary on the potential consequences decreased immigration and the dangers of separating immigrants into "good" and "bad" categories. Click here to listen to the story.
  • Spectrum News interviewed Political Science Professor Kevin Hardwick, PhD, for a November 4 story examining voter participation and the impact of undecided and non-voters.   • Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity Justin Del Vecchio, PhD, appeared on the Oct. 31 edition of WGRZ-TV's "Most Buffalo."   • Assistant Professor of Management & Marketing Mary Owusu visited “News 4 at 4” on WIVB-TV Channel 4 on Friday, October 25 to discuss the “Future on Our Feet 5K.” The event is being organized by Owusu’s IMC Masterclass to raise funds for sustainable projects for men, women and children in Kenya and Zambia. Owusu was joined by Canisius students Sophia Kehl ’26 and Mekhi Edwards ’25 to discuss the IMC Masterclass and the fundraiser.  Click here to watch the story.
  • Phillip Reed, PhD, authored an article for The National Review titled "The Assisted-Suicide Bait and Switch."  In it, the professor and chair of the Philosophy Department argues that the trend of reducing or eliminating waiting periods for assisted suicide undermines the initial safeguards meant to protect patients from impulsive decisions.  Click here to read the article. 
  • Journalist Lianne Kolirin from the Religion Media Centre interviewed Shyam Sriram, PhD, for an Oct. 22 article titled "Harris or Trump: How Your Faith Affects How you Vote."  The assistant professor of political science spoke about how the role of faith in U.S. politics can not be overestimated and explains why appealing to religious identity is all-important to both sides.   Click here to read the full story.  The Religion Media Centre is a syndicated news outlet based in the UK. 
  • ABEC and Anthrozoology Professor Malini Suchak, PhD, weighed in with the online magazine Mind Matters about whether animals take revenge.  In the Oct. 15 article, Suchak suggests her research indicates that animals engage in reciprocity, "which we usually think of as 'you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" and is different than revenge which ...   • The Buffalo News, WGRZ-TV Channel 2, WKBW-TV Channel 7 and WBEN-AM Radio 930 all reported on the university's launch of the Canisius Buffalo Promise Scholarship on Thursday, Oct. 10.  The innovative new initiative expands educational affordability and opportunity to the best and brightest local students by covering 100% of undergraduate tuition after aid for eligible admitted students.  President Steve Stoute spoke, in-depth, about the new scholarship initiative on Friday, Oct. 11 when he joined WBEN-AM Radio 930 anchor Brian Mazurowski on the morning program.  Click here to listen to President Stoute's interview.

Pelitera retired in May after 18 years as the strength coach for Canisius athletics and 20 as a kinesiology professor. The assistant professor of economics and finance shares insights about the best banks for personal loans and what he views as the best online loans. In addition to his role as a professor, Gattuso also serves as director of the Golden Griffin Fund.

  • Associate Professor of Economics and Finance Julie Anna Golebiewski, PhD, spoke with The Buffalo News about the region's recent job loss, from April to May. In the article, titled "A Step Back in Hiring," Golebiewski explains that although the decline interrupted a fairly steady period of hiring, the region shouldn't read too much into it.   • Professor Emerita Barb Irwin, PhD, is featured in the June 14 edition of The Buffalo News, about her new book Creating Reading Rainbow: The Untold Story of a Beloved Children's Series. The book chronicles the Buffalo origins of "Reading Rainbow," which remains one of the most successful PBS children's series in television history. Irwin worked as a project assistant for the WNED-TV program in the early years of the series. She co-authored the new book with Tony Buttino Sr. and Pam Johnson, PhD.   • The Buffalo News reported on Canisius University's new graduation guarantee in its June 12 edition. The initiative promises that students will complete a bachelor's degree in four years (eight semesters) or tuition, for up to an additional 15 credit hours, is free. Click here to read the story.
  • WKBW-TV Channel 7 interviewed Psychology Professors Marcus Thomeer, PhD and Jonathan Rodgers, PhD, from the Institute for Autism Research, for a feature story that aired Monday, June 3.   The story highlighted new research, which found the IAR's social intervention programs show positive, long-term outcomes.  In addition to the pre-recorded story, Professor Rodgers appeared live on the set of Channel 7's 5:30 p.m. program "Voices," to further expand on IAR's work with children with autism.
  • Adjunct Professor of Quantitative Sciences Matthew Gracie spoke with WBEN-AM Radio on Saturday, June 1 about the BSides Buffalo cybersecurity conference held at Canisius.  Gracie is the organizer of the annual event, which drew more than 200 professionals, enthusiasts and students to campus to showcase the latest cyber sleuthing skills.

MAY 2024

 

  • Professor of Philosophy Philip Reed, PHD, co-authored an op-ed on medical aid in dying for The Buffalo News.  The article references the Medical Aid in Dying Act, currently being considered in the New York State Legislature, which would allow  terminally ill patients access to lethal drugs prescribed by a physician.  According to Reed, the bill has fewer safeguards than other states that have legalized assisted suicide.  

  • Buffalo News columnist Sean Kirst penned an in-depth feature on the newly-graduated Jayseana Jackson ’24 for the Sunday, May 19 edition.

    Jackson was the student speaker at this year’s undergraduate ceremony for the College of Arts & Sciences. In the story, she speaks at length about her challenges in getting to college and the support system she received once attending. Also quoted in the story, Yvonne Widenor, assistant vice president for academic affiars and assistant professor of art history, and Mike Taheri ’82, a Buffalo lawyer and education volunteer at St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy.   • Maura Tyrell, PhD, spoke with the online magazine Inverse for a story titled “Can You Train Your Cat to Sit.” Tyrell is an experiential learning coordinator in animal behavior, ecology, and conservation and teaches a course on animal learning that requires students to train foster kittens.

  • Buffalo News Higher Education Reporter Janet Gramza interviewed James Nowak about recent reports that New York State is proposing a budget increase to TAP for the first time in 24 years. Canisius’ associate director of enrollment and financial aid explained how the university is working closely with students and families to provide “good faith financial aid estimates.” Click here to listen to the interview
  • Canisius University was a proud sponsor of this year’s “Go Red for Women” event, which was co-chaired by First Lady Alison Stoute and Associate Vice President for Human Resources and Compliance Linda Walleshauser. 

    The event was attended by more than 250 women and raised $100,000 in support of heart health initiatives for the American Heart Association. It also captured the attention of the local media.

  • Robert Klump was interviewed on WBEN-AM Radio 930’s “A New Morning” program on March 5.  The director of the Raichle Pre-Law Center and adjunct professor of political science provided analysis of the Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. According to the professor and chair of ABEC and anthrozoology, a cat’s aversion to water isn’t due to a preservation instinct, as cats can swim and float if necessary.   • The Buffalo News reported on Canisius being awarded a two-year, $184,000 grant from the Buffalo Urban Teaching Fellows (BUTF).  The funding supports students who participate in the BUTF program and are enrolled in the Canisius University Teacher Residency (formerly the Western New York Teacher Residency), pursuing degrees in childhood education, special education and TESOL education, and who commit to teaching in the city of Buffalo.
  • Associate Director of Financial Aid and Enrollment James Nowak was a live guest on WGRZ-TV Channel 2’s “Midday,” on Friday, January 5. Originally published in the Journal of Medical Ethics, Reed’s research argues that discrimination against the dying is a unique and important kind of discrimination that differs from discrimination against the old (ageism) and the disabled (ableism).

The story highlighted National Women’s Small Business Month.   • Canisius student Brittany Upshaw ’23, MBA ’25 was featured in the September 5 edition of Buffalo Rising.  The story focused on a new non-proft, Get Out and About, which Upshaw launched.   • Associate Professor of Economics and Finance Julie Anna Golebiewski, PhD, spoke with The Buffalo News for two separate business stories related to Buffalo Niagara’s job market. In an August 22 article, titled “Local Unemployment Remains Low,” Golebiewski indicated that previously retired workers “may be returning to the workforce following a steep rise in prices over the past two years.” In August 17 article, titled “Buffalo Niagara Region’s Job Count Rose 2.7% in July,” Golebiewski noted that though a lack of available workers continues to dampen the region’s overall job growth, manufacturing is holding its own, “which is generally a good sign of the economy as a whole.”

  • Canisius President Steve Stoute made the rounds in the local media on Thursday, June 29, following the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down affirmative action in the college admissions process. President Stoute weighed in with The Buffalo News, WGRZ-TV Channel 2 and WKBW-TV Channel 7, which also spoke with alumnus LeRoi Johnson ’71, HON ’18, who helped diversify Canisius 55 years ago.

May 23, 2022

Canisius College honored the life of Aaron Salter Jr. during undergraduate commencement ceremonies this past weekend, when it, posthumously, conferred a bachelor of arts degree upon the Tops Market security guard who lost his life in the racially motivated shooting. Salter fired multiple times at the shooter before being shot and killed himself. Salter’s son, Aaron Salter III, accepted the Canisius diploma from the college on Saturday. His father needed only three credit hours – or one class – to complete his degree. All the local media outlets attended commencement ceremonies to report on the degree conferral:

The Buffalo News and Channels 2, 4 and 7 visited the Margaret Wendt Animal Behavior Lab in Science Hall to get a first-hand look at the ongoing training and enrichment exercises of the “Kittens on Campus.”

Canisius students are teaching the eight-week old kittens how to walk into carriers on their own, how to complete small agility courses and how to high-five.  The training and enrichment exercises are aimed at making the kittens more attractive adoption candidates and encouraging positive relationships with humans.
