"Redirecting the Gaze: Self-Portraits by Women Artists"
Yvonne K. Widenor, Visiting Assistant Professor
When first exploring a publication entitled 500 Self-Portraits, I was struck by the very low number of self-portraits by women illustrated in the book. This led me on an exploration of self-portraiture and they continue to intrigue me: whose self-portraits do we "value" more as a society? What motivates an artist to create a self-portrait? To whom is the gaze directed? Does the gaze look back at the artist or towards the viewer?
