BUFFALO, NY – The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) announced that the Canisius University School of Education & Human Services is one of 16 providers from 10 states and the District of Columbia to receive accreditation for their educator preparation programs. The spring 2017 review by the CAEP Accreditation Council increased to 50 the total number of providers approved under the CAEP teacher preparation standards – rigorous, nationally recognized standards developed to ensure excellence in educator preparation programs. The recognition is the result of a comprehensive examination to ensure that all Canisius University teacher education programs meet the rigorous national standards set by CAEP. These include content and pedagogy, clinical experiences, program impact and capacity for continuous improvement.
The School of Education & Human Services previously held accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). In 2013, CAEP assumed all accrediting authority from NCATE and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC), to become the sole national accrediting body responsible for overseeing the standards of quality and rigor, which education preparation providers (EPPs) must now pass.
“This achievement is the result of much hard work by Canisius faculty and administrators, and enables the School of Education to continue doing what it does best, which is to prepare highly- effective, socially committed educators and educational leaders who value working towards social justice and leadership through service,” says Jeffrey R. Lindauer, PhD, dean of the School of Education & Human Services.
The CAEP accreditation status is effective from spring 2017 through spring 2024 and establishes Canisius’ excellence across all teacher education.
The School of Education & Human Services is home to four departments (Counseling and Human Services, Graduate Education and Leadership, Kinesiology and Teacher Education), and the Office of Professional Studies. The School offers 13 undergraduate majors, 22 graduate programs and multiple certifications, extensions and advance certificates of study. In addition, the school houses the Institute for Autism Research, the JUSTICE Project and the newly opened Center for Urban Education.
