You can make an impact on the lives of others while you nourish your soul. Join Campus Ministry on a service-immersion experience to New Orleans from June 3-10, 2017.
The program includes serving the poor and homeless at a Jesuit outreach center in downtown New Orleans, a visit to the Angola Prison, cultural and immersion experiences through lectures, storytelling and music, and group reflection sessions as they relate to social justice, equality and faith. More than 10 years ago, the college partnered with Catholic Charities and Jesuits of the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesus to help rebuild New Orleans following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.
“Saint Teresa of Calcutta said the world’s ill can be defined in these words: ‘we just have forgotten we belong to each other,’” says J. Joseph Van Volkenburg '88, senior associate campus minister at Canisius, who leads the trip. “This experience allows us to live out the Gospel’s call to serve those in need. We will process the trip through the lens of Jesuit spirituality and our faith.”
The week-long program immerses the group into the rich culture and history of New Orleans. Participants commit to centering their experiences on the cornerstones of social justice, solidarity, spirituality and simplicity.
“I took the trip four times during medical school and each time I learned more about myself and about the doctor I wanted to become,” says Megan M. Wierchowski ’10, DO, who is currently a medical resident at Sister’s Hospital. “The people of New Orleans are so gracious you would never know the hardships they face. Their spirit of hope and resilience reminded me that I can get through any tribulations that come my way.”
All participants are responsible for their own transportation to New Orleans and a $300 program fee. To secure your spot, the fee is due Friday, March 31. Lodging, transportation in New Orleans and most meals are included.
