Tackle Life's Challenges With The Nurturing Approach

BUFFALO, NY – The Canisius University Department of Counseling and Human Services presents “The Nurtured Heart Approach: Transforming Challenging Behaviors, Increasing Well-Being in All,” a workshop by licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) and behavioral specialist Joseph Clem, MA, LMFT, on Saturday, September 15 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge of the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center. 

Participants will learn the core elements of the Nurtured Heart Approach (NHA) and how to implement it in both academic and clinical settings. NHA teaches an approach to life that is consistent with the cutting-edge advancements in Positive Psychology. Pathology will not be reviewed, but the approach’s ability to strengthen those diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD), Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), Developmental Disabilities (DD), as well as typical family and intrapersonal difficulties will be reviewed. 

Applicable to any environment, NHA’s approach is a combination of ancient wisdom distinctions and behavioral techniques developed for building relationships in which people (students, clients and family) are intrinsically motivated both pro-socially and academically (or professionally). While many similar programs promote positive language, NHA focuses on the use of language as the scaffolding to build “inner-wealth” through every day interactions. 

Joseph Clem, MA, LMFT is a licensed marriage and family therapist, certified nurtured heart advanced trainer/therapist, and QMRP behavior specialist. He is the founder of The Center for Marriage and Family in Williamsville, NY. Clem oversees the behavioral health department at Southeast Works in Depew, NY, which serves more than 350 adults with developmental disabilities. He also sees clients for New Directions and Gateway Longview in the Wrap-a-round model, and Baker Victory’s foster care service Bridges to Health (B2H). Clem holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology.

Canisius University is a NBCC-approved provider. Five hours of continuing education units (CEUs) are available with attendance of full workshop. The course fee is $50 for professionals, $40 for new professionals (within one year of graduation date), $35 for Canisius faculty and staff, and $25 for cooperating counselors for the Department of Counseling and Human Services and students.
