Buffalo, NY - The Canisius University Office of Veterans Services and Army ROTC will host Veterans Day events to remember the sacrifices of America’s 25 million veterans. All events are free and open to the public.
LTC Gerald “Andy” Boston, US Army War College, will present a talk entitled “A Time to Serve, A Time to Lead,” on Saturday, November 10, at 9 a.m. in Lyons Hall Room 311.
On Monday, November 12, Canisius will hold a Veterans Day observance in front of Old Main at the college’s Greatest Generation Memorial beginning at Noon. In addition to remarks by President John J. Hurley, the Canisius community will pay special respect to the more than 6,000 service members, who gave their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, with a reading of the names of those who died in these conflicts. The roll call is expected to last several hours.
Brian Castner, former U.S. Air Force Explosive Ordinance Officer, will read from his new, critically acclaimed book “The Long Walk: A Story of War and the Life that Follows,” at 1 p.m. in the Bouwhuis Library, first floor.
As part of the National Roll Call, Canisius will also observe a “minute of silence” at 2 p.m. to honor the fallen. Canisius is one of 97schools nationwide, and one of two in New York State, to participate in the Roll Call.
As a show of service and pride, all Canisius faculty and staff who are veterans are encouraged to wear their ribbons or medals on Veterans Day. Medals tell a story of service, sacrifice, honor and accomplishment. By wearing them on Veterans Day, Canisius veterans can tell their story to the entire college and help teach students the true meaning of citizenship and freedom.
