BUFFALO, NY – Canisius University is the recipient of a $10,000 grant from Honeywell’s Buffalo Research Laboratory. The funds will be used to offset costs associated with students’ preparation and participation in the Western New York Chapter of the International Chemistry Olympiad. The Chemistry Olympiad is a local, national and international competition designed to stimulate and promote achievement in high school chemistry. It is sponsored in the U.S. by the American Chemical Society and hosted locally by Canisius University.
“Honeywell is proud to support Canisius University and its participation in this event,” said Jay Kelly, site leader for Honeywell’s Research Laboratory. “Fostering interest in the chemical sciences among high school students and helping to inspire the next generation of scientists is one of our priorities, and we are pleased that Canisius University continues to demonstrate its commitment to science education by hosting this event.”
Honeywell’s Buffalo lab has supported the Western New York Chapter of the International Chemistry Olympiad for more than 20 years and has been its principal supporter at Canisius University since 2002. Along with the company’s donation, employees of Honeywell’s Buffalo lab serve as mentors, and help nearly 80 students to prepare for local and national competitions.
The Honeywell grant is part of the corporation’s Hometown Solutions program. Building on a tradition of corporate citizenship that spans more than a century, the program’s efforts are focused on four important societal needs that align with Honeywell’s heritage, products and people: science and math education; family safety and security; housing and shelter; and humanitarian relief.
Honeywell’s Buffalo site houses the primary research and development facility for the company’s Fluorine Products business, a world leader in fluorine technology. The business manufactures and supplies a wide range of products, including non-ozone-depleting and low-global-warming-potential refrigerants and blowing agents.
Canisius University is one of 28 Catholic, Jesuit colleges in the nation and the premier private college in Western New York. Canisius prepares leaders – intelligent, caring, faithful individuals – able to promote excellence in their professions, their communities and their service to humanity.
