Buffalo, NY – The Canisius University Frank G. Raichle Lecture Series on Law in American Society welcomes Randy E. Barnett to campus on Monday, April 11 at 7:15 p.m. in the Regis Room, located on the second floor of the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center. The event, titled “Is the U.S. a Democracy or a Republic (and Why Does it Matter)," is free and open to the public. A question and answer session will follow Barnett’s lecture.
Randy Barnett is the Patrick Hotung Professor of Constitutional Law at the Georgetown University Law Center, where he teaches constitutional law and contracts, and serves as faculty director of the Georgetown Center for the Constitution.
Following Barnett’s graduation from Northwestern University and Harvard Law School, he tried many felony cases as a prosecutor in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office in Chicago. A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in constitutional studies and the Bradley Prize, Barnett has been a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University and Harvard Law School. Additionally, he is the author of 12 books and more than 100 articles and reviews, as well as numerous op-eds. Barnett’s most recent book is The Original Meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment: Its Letter and Spirit (with Evan Bernick). His other publications on the Constitution include Restoring the Lost Constitution: The Presumption of Liberty; Our Republican Constitution: Securing the Liberty and Sovereignty of We the People; and Constitutional Law: Cases in Context 4th Edition (with Josh Blackman).
Barnett’s constitutional expertise has garnered him appearances in numerous documentaries including PBS’s “Constitution USA with Peter Sagal” and “A More or Less Perfect Union” with Judge Douglas Ginsburg. In 2012, he was one of the lawyers representing the National Federation of Independent Business in its constitutional challenge to the Affordable Care Act. In 2004, Barnett argued the medical marijuana case of Gonzalez v. Raich before the U.S. Supreme Court.
