Buffalo, NY – The Canisius University Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures is hosting its spring 2022 Borders & Migrations Event Series throughout the months of March and April. The Borders and Migrations Initiative is a collaborative space where Canisius students, faculty and staff, together with members of the Western New York Community, work to understand and support the lives of immigrants and refugees around the globe. The initiative develops programs, events and opportunities for the campus community to support justice for migrants, refugees and those who meet and cross borders.
These events in the series are all free and open to the public. They will be held in person and also live streamed, and followed by question and answer sessions. The series includes the following events:
- “Xenophobia and Asian Discrimination in the Covid-19 Era” on Wednesday, March 16 in the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library Instructional Room at 12:00 p.m., featuring Secil Ertorer, associate professor, sociology/criminal justice/environmental studies.. Ertorer’s current research examines AAPI racism in the United States amid the pandemic, which forms the subject of her visit to Canisius. The event will also be live streamed here.
- “Therapeutic Intervention in Migrant Detention Centers: The Challenges of Providing Therapy to Vulnerable Populations” on Monday, April 4 in the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library Instructional Room at 12:00 p.m. featuring Poh Lin Lee, a Chinese Malaysian Australian social worker and trauma therapist. The event will be live streamed here.
- Diaspora on the Front Lines: Art Installation on Filipino Health Care Workers & Covid. The display will be up in the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library and the Science Hall Commons for the entire month of April.
- Meet the artist of Diaspora on the Front Lines: Rosem Morton on Thursday April 21, in the Science Hall Commons at 6:30 p.m. Morton is an internationally recognized documentary photographer and nurse based in Baltimore, MD. She is a National Geographic Explorer, an International Women's Media Foundation Fellow. The event will be live streamed here.
