BUFFALO, NY – Canisius University continues to celebrate its Ignatian ideals with a second video in the MAGIS@Canisius series. In this video, Russell Fiorella ’16 reflects on why he decided to initiate the Jesuit Connection Hiking Retreat at Allegheny State Park through the Office of Campus Ministry in fall 2014.
Through hikes in the woods, reflections on nature, quiet contemplation, and shared stories, participants found that they grew in their spirituality and in their awareness of magis. Mike Hayes, director of campus ministry, says that the retreat was so successful that campus ministry looks to expand the scope of the retreat and offer it to faculty, staff, clubs, and sports teams.
“I am impressed by the collaboration here among Russ, the other students, and Rev. Jim Pribek, S.J., adds Rev. Michael Tunney, S.J., director of mission and identity. “They have discovered a new way to experience our shared Ignatian spirit of going deeper in our relationships with God and one another. They give God glory and savor the richness of the world around us.”

MAGIS@Canisius is an offshoot of the myMAGIS Project, originally shared with the campus community during the 2013 Advent and 2014 Lent/Easter seasons. The project asked students, faculty and administrators to reflect on magis, a key element of Jesuit spirituality, through written essays and accompanying photographs and how they experienced this defining ideal in their daily lives.
Canisius is one of 28 Jesuit universities in the nation and the premier private university in Western New York.
