Buffalo, NY – In recognition of Black History Month, Canisius University will honor the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a presentation by Derrick Brooms, PhD, professor of sociology and Africana Studies Fellow for the Study of Social Justice at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Sponsored by the ALANA Student Center at Canisius University, the event, titled “The Mis-Education of MLK: Beyond the Man Not Taught,” is scheduled for Wednesday, February 9 at 12:00 p.m. in the Regis Rooms, located on the second floor of the Richard E. Brooms is a scholar-activist and serves as a youth worker as well. Through research, teaching, service and community/collaborative work, he is committed to educational equity, inclusion and racial justice. Brooms’ research primarily centers on Black men and boys’ pathways to and through college, as well as on their engagement on campus and identity development. He also examines Black boys’ and men’s lived experiences and representations in the media, as well as the collegiate experiences of Black and Latino men.
Brooms is the author of several books, including Being Black, Being Male on Campus: Understanding and Confronting Black Male Collegiate Experiences and Empowering Men of Color on Campus: Building Student Community in Higher Education. His most recent book, Stakes is High: Trials, Lessons and Triumphs in Young Black Men's Educational Journeys, takes a sociocultural view of young Black men's lives to understand and appreciate their educational challenges, pursuits and desires. In addition Brooms is founding editor of the Critical Race Studies in Education book series with SUNY Press.
The ALANA Student Center provides African American, Latinx American, Asian American and Native American students with various services that help students to succeed at Canisius and after they graduate.
