Buffalo, NY – In recognition of Black History Month, Canisius University will honor the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a presentation featuring author, speaker, coach and consultant Tara Jabbaar-Gyambrah, PhD. Her lecture is titled “Passing the Baton: Lessons from MLK on Resilience for the NEXT Generation.” It is scheduled for Wednesday, February 8 at 3:30 p.m. in the Regis Room, located on the second floor of the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center. The event is free and open to the public.
Jabbaar-Gyambrah is an award-winning author, change maker and committed servant leader with more than 20 years of experience in higher education. She is the senior consultant and founder of TMJ Consulting, a national firm that provides solutions for higher education institutions, corporations and nonprofit organizations. In this role, Jabbaar-Gyambrah teaches and equips leaders with the tools they need to succeed on their uniquely designed path. She is considered a trailblazer in the marketplace and a leader in the fields of diversity, equity and inclusion, leadership development, and curriculum design.
Jabbaar-Gyambrah is the author of The Roadmap to Investing in Yourself: The Real Cost of a College Education and Is College a Lousy Investment: Negotiating the Hidden Costs of Higher Education. She also co-authored Pathways to Resiliency: Black and Latino Families in America with ConSandra McNeil, and has published numerous scholarly articles for the Journal of College Admissions, the Journal of Race and Policy and the Southwest Journal of Cultures, among others.
Jabbaar-Gyambrah earned a PhD from the University at Buffalo’s American Studies program, specializing in global gender studies (women’s studies) along with an advanced certificate in teaching for leading diversity. She is also a graduate of several leadership programs including but not limited to the National African American Leadership Institute (NAAWLI), Harvard Business School Not-For-Profit Management Development Program, SUNY Sail Institute Leadership Program, and the CIC Senior Leadership Academy. In 2016, the National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) presented Jabbaar-Gyambrah with its John B. Muir
Award for her outstanding contributions to college admissions counseling field.
