BUFFALO, NY – ArtsCanisius presents the following performances, which are free and open to the public, unless otherwise specified:
- Sunday, February 5 – Meet-the-Faculty Recital, a Canisius Faculty Composers’ Concert at 2:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The performance will feature works by Composers Bob Accurso, Michael Colquhoun, Roland E. Martin and Persis Vehar. Performers include BPO Clarinetist John Fullam, the composers and other Canisius faculty members.
- Tuesday, February 14 – Informally-Formal Chamber Recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The recital will feature Matthew Bassett, Mark Hodges and Dinesh Joseph, percussion. The unusual program highlights chamber works for percussion and other instruments including marimba duets by Steve Reich, Dantreume Leu Pliska (“Pre-recollections of War”) by James Oliverio and Lift Off! by Russell Peck. Tickets are $15 general admission and $7 for students; they can be purchased at the door, by calling the Fine Arts Office or online.
- Thursday, February 16 – “Voices – 1, 2 and More,” a lecture/demonstration at 2:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Centerfeaturing Canisius University Composer-in-Residence Persis Parshall Vehar. Vehar will give the audience the inside story of a composer’s process that ranges from solo songs to major choral works. Citing examples from her own pieces, Vehar will illustrate the developmental process of vocal compositional technique.
- Thursday, February 23 – “A Tale of Three Cities…Three Lutenists, a Political Fantasia and the Siena Lute Book,” a Meet-the-Faculty Music History Lecture featuring Richard D. Falkenstein, PhD. The presentation will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the Regis Room of theRichard E Winter ’42 Student Center. The paper discusses the points of contact in Naples and Rome between the mid-sixteenth century lutenists Fabrizio and Luigo Dentice and Perino Fiorentino and considers the possibility that they may have traveled to France together. It also proposes that traces of their relationship can be found in a politically charged fantasia composed by Perino and in the contents of the manuscript known as the “Siena Lute Book,” one of the most important sources of Italian lute music sources from the 1500s.
The ArtsCanisius series at Canisius University presents concerts by professional musicians, including members of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Canisius faculty, art shows and lectures by professional artists, as well as student recitals.
